Workshop Dates and Descriptions

Work Shops for Trimester 1

Week of October 3-7th

Wed. 10/5 4-5 Logic Puzzles (Math)

Description: Suitable for someone with any level of experience. Choose to puzzle on your own or with a group.

Thursday 10/6 3:30-4:30 Trail Hike (PE/Health)

Description: Starting at the bottom parking lot of College Place Middle School we will hike the trail the runs past the golf course, through part of Edmonds Community College, and then behind the Edmonds School District Office and Post Office. This trail hike takes roughly 45-60 minutes at a brisk pace. You’re welcome to bring your dog! eLearning PE students will earn double the amount of fitness log minutes for participating.

Week of October 10-14th

Wed. 10/12 2:30-3:30 “They Said What?!?” (Social Studies)

Description: Presidential Debate viewing and analysis. All students welcome regardless of grade or political knowledge.

Thursday 10/13 11:30-12:30 Found Poetry (Language Arts)

Description: Found poetry is free form and is created by taking letters, words, and sometimes whole phrases from other sources such as book pages, newspaper clippings, and magazine clippings. Think of it as a literary version of a collage. We will be spending some time looking at and reading examples of found poems, then working on our own. If you can, please bring a newspaper or magazine(s) to work with. All levels of poets are welcome!

Week of Oct. 17-21st

Wed. Oct. 19th 4-5 Code.org

Description: These activities are particularly well-suited to those who are currently taking Pre-Algebra or Algebra 1, and/or are new to programming. Let Kristi know you are coming by 4pm on Tuesday Oct 18th. Bring your charged laptop with you.

Thursday Oct. 20th 3:30-4:30 Track Run/Walk

Description: Meet me at the track on the campus of College Place Middle School. Whether you choose to run or walk or do a bit of both the point is to get outside and be active! eLearning PE students will earn double the amount of fitness log minutes for walking and three times the amount of minutes for running.

Week of Oct. 24th- 28th

Wed. Oct. 26th 4-5 Desmos Games (Math)

Description: There is a great variety of games and activities in Desmos beyond their calculator. Let’s explore them! There are games for someone with any level of math experience. Let Kristi know you are coming by 4pm on Monday Oct 24th. (Notice: RSVP by Monday, not Tuesday. This will give Kristi time to find games that will be not too easy and not too hard for each of you.) Bring your charged laptop with you.

Thursday Oct. 27th 3:30-4:30 How Fast Can you Run? (PE/Health)

Description: How fast can you run a mile? Meet me at the track on the campus of College Place Middle School and find out. eLearning PE students will earn two hours of fitness logs for running a mile (but you gotta give me your best effort!). If you aren’t interested in running a mile you’re still welcome to come and walk the track.

Week of Oct. 31st- Nov. 4th

Thursday Nov. 3rd 11:30-12:30 Poetry Territories (Language Arts)

Description: Do you ever sit down to write and get stuck looking at a blank page with no clue where to begin? This workshop will focus on how to create a master list of topics and ideas for your poems and creative writing. All levels of writers are welcome!

Thursday Nov. 3rd 3:00-4:00 Electoral College: Compromise or Conspiracy? (Social Studies)

Description: Learn about the Electoral College and debate its value. All students welcome regardless of grade or political knowledge.

Week of Nov. 7th- 10th

Tuesday Nov. 8th 5:00-6:00 Politicians and Talking Heads: Election Night Workshop and Viewing Party (Social Studies)

Description: Watch the Election Results come in, compare media coverage, and track electoral votes. All students welcome regardless of grade or political knowledge. Workshop from 5:00-6:00, but we the party will continue until a winner is declared!

Thursday Nov. 10th 11:30-12:30 Haiku (Language Arts)

Description: Come join us for a workshop on Haikus. We will be going over Haiku structure and practicing together before putting on some music and spending some time working inpidually. All levels of poets are welcome!

Week of Nov. 14-18th

Wed. Nov. 16th 4-5 Graphing Arts (Math/Art)

Description: This is like connect-the-dots, but way more fun. No prior knowledge needed. Let Kristi know you are coming by 4pm on Tuesday Nov 15th. If you have favorite coloring materials (colored pencils, markers, pastels, paints, etc), bring them with you.

Thurs. Dec. 1st 3:00-4:00 What in the World is Happening?!? (Social Studies)

Description: Focus on current world events, learn about issues, conflicts and all out wars happening right now. All students welcome regardless of grade or current event knowledge.

Thurs. Dec. 1st 11:30-12:30 SLAM POETRY. (Language Arts)

Description: During this workshop, we will view some great examples of SLAM poetry and discuss qualities of what makes a really great performance. Time will be available towards the end for students that would like to come up in front of the group to perform (though this is not a requirement!). All levels of poets are welcome!
